Practical information

The small print, up front

Licences, permits, contacts and the handful of rules that catch visitors out. Everything here points back to the official source, because in the end the official source is what counts.

Licences & permits

None of these can be bought in the village. All of them are online or in Bangor.

Fishing

Maine fishing licence

Required to fish inland waters if you are 16 or older. About $27 for a resident year, about $69 for a non-resident, and about $14 for a non-resident day licence. Under 16 fish free; Maine residents 70 and over are exempt.

Open fire

Burn permit

Most outdoor burning needs a permit — including campfires, brush and leaf fires. Permits are free and issued online by the State of Maine. Fire restrictions can be imposed locally in dry periods; check before you light anything.

Hunting

Hunting licence

Maine hunting licences are seasonal and species-specific, and a big part of the valley's character in the autumn. Apply through Maine IF&W; the town office also stocks licences locally.

Water rules on the Kenduskeag

Fishing rules on the Kenduskeag are specific to the river and change with the season: catch-and-release for brown trout and landlocked salmon in the upper sections, an 8-inch minimum for brook trout in spring, a closure from July 1 to September 15 on the town reach, and artificial lures only from mid-September. The full section-by-section rules are on the stream page ↗, and the current law book is published by Maine IF&W ↗. Check it before you fish.

Know before you go

Rules worth knowing

  • No open fire without a permit. This includes campfires. The permit is free and online, but it must be obtained before you light anything.
  • Life jackets on the water. Coast Guard approved PFDs, worn, not carried. The Kenduskeag is cold and fast and does not forgive.
  • Know the rapids. Six Mile Falls, Flour Mill and Maxfield Dam are the three features that decide a trip. Scout them first.
  • Dogs on a lead. Allowed on most trails and on the Kenduskeag Stream Trail. Not allowed in the canoe race.
  • Leave the riverside alone. The banks are private property. Fish and walk from public access points, and pack out what you carry in.
  • Wildlife gets the space. Do not feed the eagles, and keep food out of sight — black bears live in these woods year round.
  • Watch the fire danger. In dry spells the state and the town both restrict burning. Check before you light a campfire or a stove.
